Meet Dory Youhana: The Architect Turned Digital Fashion Designer

Hi Dory! Thank you so much for chatting with us. Can you please introduce yourself and provide a brief overview of your background and journey into the world of digital fashion?

Hello! It’s a pleasure to chat with you. My name is Dory, I’m originally from Iran and I moved to San Francisco, California five years ago. I started my career as an architect, where I developed a strong affinity for digital design software. The ability to create intricate and imaginative structures through these platforms captivated me.  Six years ago, however, I found myself equally drawn to the world of fashion, intrigued by the artistry and creative expression it offered.  That is where I feel I truly belong.  

Fueled by this newfound passion, I decided to pursue a degree in fashion design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California. There I found myself uniquely positioned as someone with a background in architecture and a keen interest in fashion design. 

This background became a significant asset in the digital fashion world, as I brought my expertise in design software and technology to the forefront of my creative process. Embracing both my architectural and fashion design experiences, I have been able to seamlessly blend these disciplines and push the boundaries of what's possible in digital fashion.

My journey has been marked by constant learning and experimentation with various software and platforms, exploring how digital tools can elevate and revolutionize the fashion industry. Embracing this synergy between architecture and fashion has allowed me to forge a unique path in this ever-evolving landscape, and I'm excited to see where it takes me next.

What initially sparked your interest in digital fashion, and how has it shaped your creative process and career trajectory?

My interest in digital fashion was sparked from a young age when I first discovered digital worlds through games like The Sims. Building homes and crafting virtual worlds at the age of 8 unleashed a creative spark that led me down the avenue of digital creative tools. This passion for digital design led me to pursue architecture, where I could further explore my love for shaping virtual spaces.

However, my journey into fashion design really began when I took a two-year fashion course back in my home country. Encouraged by my instructors, I decided to dive deeper into this exciting new territory. When I joined the Academy of Art University, my focus primarily lay in the design process itself, as opposed to the actual construction of garments. Sewing was admittedly intimidating to me at that time. 

It was during this time at the Academy that I stumbled upon digital fashion, and it completely transformed my creative process and career trajectory. Embracing digital design tools allowed me to unleash my creativity and explore fashion in a whole new dimension. Not only did it provide me with a way to materialize my ideas in a virtual space, but it also granted me the opportunity to iterate and refine my designs without the limitations of physical constraints.

One of the most significant advantages I found in digital fashion was the ability to sample and experiment with different iterations of a garment virtually. This not only saved time but also reduced the environmental impact by minimizing fabric waste and resources. Designing responsibly and sustainably is a core value I uphold, and digital fashion aligns perfectly with this principle.

Through digital fashion, I gained confidence in my sewing abilities as I could perfect the fit and design before even touching physical fabric. This newfound confidence spilled over into the physical realm, making me more adept at the practical aspects of garment construction.

Can you share a particular breakthrough moment or turning point in your journey that has had a significant impact on your work?

Certainly! Before delving into digital fashion, I had experienced challenges and hesitations when it came to sewing and garment construction. Traditional school sewing classes and the architecture sampling process often resulted in wastage of materials, which left me feeling intimidated by the prospect of creating physical garments.

The turning point came when I discovered the power of digital design software specifically tailored for fashion. It was a revelation to realize that I could create and manipulate virtual garments without the need for physical materials. This allowed me to sample and iterate countless times, refining the fit, style, and details with ease.

The digital platform provided me with the freedom to experiment and make changes in a cost-effective and sustainable way. I no longer had to be afraid of wasting resources. This newfound confidence in the digital space began to positively influence my physical garment construction skills as well. As I gained a deeper understanding of how garments should fit and function in the virtual realm, I could transfer that knowledge to the physical world with more precision and efficiency.

What inspires and influences your creative vision and design aesthetic?

Music: Music has an immense impact on my creative process. Different genres and artists evoke various emotions and moods that fuel my imagination. I find myself drawing inspiration from the rhythm, beat, and overall atmosphere of songs, which often shape the essence of my designs.

Personal Style: My own personal style serves as a foundation for my creative vision. The way I express myself through clothing and accessories influences the direction I take in my projects. It allows me to infuse my designs with authenticity and a sense of self, creating garments that resonate with my own sensibilities.

Planned Inspirations and Themes: For other projects, where I work collaboratively or have a specific brief, I often begin with pre-planned inspirations and themes. These could be derived from art, nature, historical periods, or cultural influences. Working with defined concepts enables me to channel my creativity effectively and ensures a cohesive and intentional design process.

How do you approach the intersection of fashion and technology in your work? Are there specific principles or values that guide your creative process?

A central focus in my approach is sustainability and responsible production. I am deeply committed to reducing the environmental impact of my creations. With digital sampling and prototyping, I minimize material waste, optimizing resource utilization throughout the design process. This conscientious approach ensures that my fashion aligns with eco-friendly principles, contributing to a more sustainable industry.

Additionally, ethical considerations underpin my design philosophy. I approach each project with a sense of responsibility, making thoughtful choices to ensure my creations reflect not only aesthetics but also positive social and environmental impacts.

Can you highlight one of your most memorable projects or collaborations and the story behind it? What made it particularly special or challenging?

One of my most memorable creations was for a school project during my third year in the design class. I had the incredible opportunity to participate in CFDA's scholarship awards, where my project, “Banned.," was shortlisted to be submitted for the Design for Justice category of the competition. Though I didn't ultimately win the scholarship, the entire process of working on this project left a lasting impact on me.

“Banned." was a deeply personal project, as it delved into the Iranian people's lifelong struggle with government censorship and dictatorship. Growing up in Iran as a minority, being Assyrian/Iranian, had presented its own challenges, and this project allowed me to address those experiences through my designs. It became a cathartic journey for me, exploring and expressing my perspective on the struggles faced by my people.

The research phase of the project proved to be emotionally demanding at times. There were moments when I was researching Iranian history where I became overwhelmed, and I found it difficult to continue.  I felt a righteous indignation whenever I came across videos of hired tourists portraying Iran as a normal, happy country, when it went so far against my personal experiences. The dystopia of my Iranian reality raged against the government-issued facade of cultural wealth and prosperity.  My personal connection to the subject matter kept me going. I wanted to use my designs to convey the poignant narratives and the resilience of the Iranian people in the face of adversity.

Pushing through the emotional challenges, I poured my heart and soul into "Banned." The designs were a reflection of my identity, and each piece carried a profound message. While I may not have been selected for the scholarship, being one of the students chosen by our school for the Design for Justice category was an affirmation of the authenticity and impact of my work.

This project remains special to me because it not only showcased my creative abilities but also allowed me to voice the struggles of my community through fashion. It was a powerful reminder of the influence fashion holds as a medium for storytelling and social commentary. The entire experience strengthened my resolve to continue using fashion as a platform for meaningful expression and advocacy, making a positive difference in the world through my designs.

How do you see fashion technology contributing to a more sustainable and responsible future for the industry? Are there any specific initiatives or practices you are passionate about?

Here are some ways in which fashion technology can contribute to positive change:

- Sustainable Materials and Production: Technology enables the development and use of innovative, sustainable materials, such as bio-based textiles and recycled fibers. Advancements in 3D printing and digital fabrication also allow for more efficient and less wasteful production processes, reducing the industry's environmental footprint.

- Virtual Sampling and Digital Prototyping: Digital fashion tools facilitate virtual sampling and prototyping, minimizing the need for physical samples and reducing material waste. This not only saves resources but also accelerates the design process, fostering more sustainable and efficient production.

- On-Demand Production: Technology allows for on-demand and made-to-order production, reducing excess inventory and minimizing the waste associated with mass-produced fashion. This shift towards personalized, demand-driven fashion promotes a more sustainable and efficient approach.

What challenges or obstacles have you encountered in your journey, and how have you overcome them?

One major hurdle has been the lack of awareness and understanding of fashion technology among many individuals. As a newcomer to this field, I encountered skepticism and a perception that digital fashion is not taken as seriously as more traditional approaches. To overcome this obstacle, I embraced continuous learning and honed my skills in fashion technology. 

At the beginning of my journey, recognition was hard to come by. I persisted by focusing on the quality of my work, staying dedicated to my vision, and seeking feedback from mentors and peers. As I am continuing to refine my craft, my efforts are beginning to be noticed by like-minded professionals, allowing me to connect with people who share my vision and values.

How do you envision the way we create, consume, and interact with fashion in the future?

VR and AI technologies will revolutionize the design process, providing fashion designers with immersive virtual environments to conceptualize and create their collections. Designers will be able to visualize and manipulate garments in 3D, enabling faster prototyping and iteration, and ultimately leading to more innovative and sophisticated designs. 

Digital fashion, where garments and designs exist purely in the virtual realm, will gain prominence. Digital fashion allows for limitless creativity, experimentation, and expression without the limitations of physical materials. Digital fashion pieces can be worn in virtual worlds, online avatars, or shared on social media, opening up new avenues for fashion creativity and expression.

The fashion industry will prioritize inclusivity and diversity, celebrating different body types, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds. Inclusivity will become a core value, influencing both design and marketing decisions, fostering a more representative and empowering fashion landscape.

Are there any particular artists, designers, or thought leaders in the fashion technology realm who have influenced or inspired your work? If so, why?

Rick Owens, known for his avant-garde and dark aesthetics, has a unique and daring approach to fashion design. His unconventional and boundary-pushing designs have undoubtedly resonated with me, aligning with my passion for exploring innovative and non-traditional concepts in fashion. His ability to create bold and thought-provoking pieces have inspired me to experiment with unconventional materials and push the boundaries of traditional fashion.

Alexander McQueen, a true visionary in the fashion world, was known for his artistic and theatrical creations. His ability to tell powerful and emotional stories through his designs have influenced my own aspiration to use fashion as a medium for storytelling and social commentary. McQueen's work often combined intricate craftsmanship with a deep emotional and conceptual connection, which have sparked my desire to infuse meaning and authenticity into my own designs.

Both designers have left a lasting impact on the fashion industry, challenging norms and inspiring a new generation of designers to think beyond the conventional. It's evident that their work has resonated with mr on a personal and creative level, encouraging me to delve into the world of fashion technology and push the boundaries of what is possible in the industry. By drawing inspiration from these fashion icons, I continue to carve my own unique path and contribute to the evolution of fashion in a meaningful and innovative way.

Can you discuss the role of inclusivity and diversity in the fashion technology industry and its importance in shaping a more equitable future?

By considering the needs and preferences of diverse communities, the industry can create products and solutions that are accessible and relevant to a wider audience. Consumers today value brands that prioritize inclusivity and diversity. Brands that authentically embrace these principles often enjoy higher customer loyalty and a positive brand reputation, leading to long-term success and a competitive edge in the market.

Having fashion technology at our fingertips, available to all who wish to participate, opens a broader range of creativity than ever before.  With new, faster methods of collaboration we can discover infinitely more artistic avenues, allowing for the equal expression of all walks of life.  

By prioritizing inclusivity in all aspects of its operations, the industry can drive positive change, empower marginalized communities, foster creativity, and leave a lasting positive impact on society and the planet. As the world evolves, an inclusive fashion tech industry is not just a preference; it is a responsibility and an opportunity to create a better, more united, and forward-thinking world for all.

What are your future aspirations and goals? Is there a particular impact or legacy you hope to leave?

One of my key aspirations is to drive the adoption of digital fashion as a more sustainable and innovative alternative to traditional garment production. By leveraging digital design tools and virtual sampling, I aim to minimize waste and resource consumption in the design process. Virtual prototyping allows for experimentation and iteration without the need for physical materials, reducing the environmental impact associated with physical sampling and production.

My vision for the future of digital fashion is to create a more circular and conscious fashion ecosystem. By utilizing technology to enable on-demand and made-to-order designs, I strive to eliminate overproduction and excess inventory, contributing to a more sustainable and responsible industry. Through my work, I hope to inspire others to embrace the transformative potential of digital fashion and leave a lasting legacy of positive change in the way we create, consume, and interact with fashion in the digital age.
